Hawaii Eating on a Budget

Guide to Eating on a Budget in Hawaii

Hawaii Eating on a Budget

There is a huge misconception that eating in Hawaii can be very expensive leading to many people thinking that Hawaii is out of their league for travel. I am here to tell you that when you plan with a Certified Hawaii Travel Expert, you are not only going to get the best deals on your Hawaii flight and resort but we have the inside scoop on where to dine on a budget.

One thing to get out of the way, Hawaii does not offer an all-inclusive experience. Hawaii is not a resort, it is a destination. This means that you are encouraged to go out and explore! There is absolutely nothing to fear.

  1. Plate Lunches- Pull over when you are driving around and treat yourself to a plate lunch. The simple version is a to-go box that ha, steamed rice, creamy macaroni salad and a meat. These boxes will cost you anywhere from $8-$12 and you will be VERY full! We have been known to share a couple at a table so we can try various items. These plate lunches are authentic and give you a cultural taste of Hawaii.
  2. Shrimp Trucks- These trucks are becoming very famous in the North Shore of Oahu. During lunch you will begin to see dozen of lined trucks offering a variety of their spin on garlic butter and shrimp. Much like a lunch plate you will get a to-go box which includes steamed rice and garlic shrimp. No two trucks are the same so be sure to try all of them! At around $12 per box your wallet won’t take much of a hit.
  3. Stay away from your hotel! I repeat, “STAY AWAY FROM YOUR HOTEL” food on your resort is going to be very expensive. Resorts in Hawaii are no different then resorts on the mainland. If you are staying at a Hyatt in Chicago, you don’t eat there, you leave a head to the local burger join for a fraction of the cost. These rules apply in Hawaii. Now, this is not to say that you should not ever eat there, but if you go to Hawaii for 10 days plan to dine out most of the time.
  4. Farmers’ Market- Take full advantage of local delicacies at ultra low prices when you make a stop at a local farmers’ market. You will find things from lettuce to exotic fruits and vegetables. In some cases you will even see some meal/meat options. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture maintains a directory of such markets on every island. As you can see, it is very easy to eat on a budget in Hawaii..you just need to explore and #lethawaiihappen.
