After 250+ visits to Walt Disney World, I thought I knew it all. Then a stay at Pop Century and a trip with my adult son changed everything.
I’ve been to Walt Disney World over 250 times. It’s one of the loves of my life in terms of travel. So when I planned a 10-day trip this July with my husband, my 21-year-old son, and his girlfriend, I thought I knew exactly what to expect. What I didn’t anticipate was how much I still had to learn, and how a Value Resort would completely shift my perspective.
We chose to stay at Pop Century in two rooms. It had been eight to 10 years since we’d stayed there, and honestly, I was a bit hesitant. We typically stay at Deluxe Resorts. But we wanted the extra space, and I figured it would be a good experiment. What I discovered surprised me in the best possible way.
A Different Kind of Disney Magic
Pop Century was super clean, and the rooms were perfect for two adults. But what really won me over was the access to the Skyliner. I know we talk about it all the time and share it with clients constantly, but actually experiencing those leisurely mornings made all the difference. Having my coffee and just strolling over to the Skyliner to get to Hollywood Studios or Epcot turned our vacation into something genuinely relaxing.
We took things slow, and that became the theme of our entire trip. We’d sleep in, get to the parks around 10:00 in the morning, and usually be back at the hotel by 7:00 at night. We swam in the evenings, watched movies in the room, and sometimes stayed out late at Disney Springs. It was a completely different rhythm than the go-go-go pace most people associate with Disney.
The Lightning Lane Experiment
Here’s what truly stunned me: for all 10 days, we didn’t buy a single Lightning Lane. I had fully anticipated needing them because of the July crowds and heat. But relying on the touring plans we’ve developed over a lifetime of visiting Walt Disney World, we never waited longer than an hour for anything. It was pretty amazing to prove that the same knowledge we give our clients actually works in practice. The Lightning Lanes are fantastic and they’re there when you need them, but this trip showed me they’re not always necessary if you know how to navigate the parks strategically.
One tip I’ll share: schedule your sit-down meals for 11 a.m. and make lunch your main dining experience. By the time you’re walking out of your meal, full and ready to go, everyone who arrived at rope drop is leaving because they’re hot and tired. We did this last summer with a group of 15, and it’s probably one of the best strategies I can offer for non-morning people who still want lower crowds.
Discovering New Magic with Adult Kids
Touring with your adult children is something entirely different. When you’ve raised them with Disney being part of their childhood, going back together as all adults unlocks a completely new layer of the magic. There’s a freedom to it. We just did what we wanted every day, every moment. No stroller logistics, no meltdown management, just genuine quality time together. I absolutely fell in love with experiencing the parks this way.
Who This Trip Is Perfect For
One lesson I learned the hard way: don’t wait too long to book. I planned this trip closer to travel than usual and missed out on a great discount. I’ve already booked our trip for next year and applied the newest promotion. Planning six to nine months ahead isn’t just about securing reservations, it’s about budgeting and giving yourself time to add extras like after-hours events or holiday parties.
After this trip, I’ll never hesitate to recommend Pop Century again. Don’t let a Value Resort deter you if that’s what fits your budget. You still get the same Disney quality service, the same magic, and the busing system was fantastic. Having experienced it myself after so many years away, I’m genuinely thrilled to share this with my clients going forward.
