Making Custom Minnie Ears for your Disney Vacation

ears4Disney can be a pricey vacation, and a lot of people save up for years to make their dream a reality. I’m definitely one of those families. I’m a penny pinching, do-it-yourself kind of mom all the way.

One of those Must-Have, Never-Use-Again souvenirs are Mouse Ear hats. They might get use on Halloween, or you may pack them the next time you go, but really, the only place people really wear them is while they are at Disney.

Before heading down, I scavenge places for inexpensive counter-parts to expensive Disney versions- Lanyards, light up toys, hand held fans, and yes, even Mouse Ears.

I found that Party City (if you do not have a Party City, I recommend checking party supply stores that carry character specific party sets) carries Minnie Mouse headbands for just under $6.00. They were comfortable, and did not give me a headache. I own a pair of $20 sequin covered Minnie ears on a headband from Disney, and they cause a lot of pain in a short amount of time.

The ears from Party City are fabric, black with silver glittery specks, and include a pink & white bow.

For this craft, I needed:

1 Minnie Mouse Ear headband
Hot Glue Gun
Assortment of Gems (These can be purchased at most dollar stores, craft stores, and even scrapbooking shops)

My idea was to cover the ears in gems. In reality, there is nothing that will support the weight, so I had to scale back.

Step 1: Each headband had a pink & white polka dot bow in place. I secured the ears better by gluing each ear to the backside of the bow. This helps them stay upright with the weight of the gems better.

Step 2: Pick out the gems you want, and play around with how you want them laid out on the ears. I chose to randomly place the gems, but you may want to make a design, or use specific colors.

Step 3: One at a time, start gluing each gem into place.

Step 4: Once the ears are complete and the glue is dry, pull away the glue strands, or use a blow dryer on hot to melt them away.

Optional: Glitter glue can be used to create designs on the ears as well. You can further customize them by adding a name, or the year of the vacation to the back side of the ears.

Alternately to using the headbands, plain black Mouse Ear hats can be purchased at Disneystore.com from either WDW or DLR for around $14. These can be customized easily in the same ways described above.

Enjoy this fun craft, perfect for help from younger kids as well!
