The Best Family Trip to Ireland: A 10-Day Luxury Itinerary

We just got back from 10 days of driving around Ireland, and honestly, it was the perfect mix of high-end resorts and “real” local history. If you’re looking for the best family trip to Ireland, you know the planning can get overwhelming. We decided to curate our own self-drive route so we could go at our own pace, and it was the best decision we made—especially for a family trip to Ireland with teens.

From five-star castles to “Ireland’s Alcatraz,” here is exactly how we spent our time.

Starting the Family Trip in Dublin, Ireland

We kicked things off with a family trip to Dublin, Ireland, staying two nights at The College Green Hotel. The location is unbeatable—right in the center of everything.

  • Where we ate: We had a great dinner at The Church Bar (the architecture is wild) and a more traditional, “must-do” meal at Gallaghers Boxty House. (Order the Irish Lamb Stew)

  • What we did: We spent time shopping on Grafton Street before picking up our rental car to head west.

Exploring Ireland Family Trip Ideas: Castles & Cliffs

One of the most common questions I get is about family trips to Ireland ideas that actually keep everyone entertained. For us, that meant moving from the city to the countryside.

Ashford Castle & the Town of Cong

Our next stop was Ashford Castle. If you’re researching a large family trip to Ireland, this place is the gold standard for luxury. We did the morning history walk through the castle grounds and the nearby town of Cong. But the real highlight? The Falconry Experience. There’s nothing like having a hawk land on your arm to make you feel like you’ve truly arrived in Ireland.

Killarney & The Ring of Kerry

From Mayo, we drove to the Killarney Park Hotel. We loved the vibe here—dinner at Laurels and live music in the local pubs made for the perfect evenings. If you love coffee, be sure to walk about 1-minute from the Killarney Park to Boardwalk Coffee Shop, Jason will take great care of you. His coffee is wonderful!

Travel Agent Tip: Even though we had our own car, we booked a Paddywagon tour for the Ring of Kerry. The roads are famously narrow, and honestly, it was nice to let someone else handle the driving so we could actually look at the views. It’s a great way to keep your family trip to Ireland cost in check while getting the best local stories.

History & Estates: Cork to Kildare

We wrapped up the trip with a mix of heavy history and high-end “country pursuits.”

  • Fota Island Resort: This was our base for visiting the Titanic Experience in Cobh and taking the ferry to Spike Island. If you have teens who like history, Spike Island is a must—it’s fascinating and a bit haunting. If you have teens who watch Sam and Colby, there’s an episode where they visit Spike Island. Watch it here.

  • The K Club: We finished at The K Club to experience the estate lifestyle. We spent our last few days clay pigeon shooting and horseback riding across their 550 acres. It was the perfect, high-energy way to end the vacation.
